The semi-medicinal use of tea brew is noted in 1662 by Mendelslo. The Singhpo tribe in Assam used tea leaves as a form of medicine since at least the 12th century.
In the early part of 1820-23, Major R. Bruce discovered some indigenous tea plants growing wildly in upper Assam. These plants had long been cultivated by the Singphos tribe of Assam.
